No, we didn ʼt stay in Puerto Rico for 2 months to rape and pillage, nor was I swept away by Captain Depp. Just finished a week cruise in Culebra and Vieques with three charterers from the city. Preferring to avoid the crowds in the US and BVI, we elected to sail the Spanish Virgins. What a great choice!!!!

The charterers were perfect. One a sailor, two others novices who learned fast (must have had a good teacher). Interesting with varied careers. Nondrinkers, which made life and provisioning much simpler. They arose daily at 5:45 am to dinghy to the beach for yoga. This is the way to do it in the Caribbean. We had time to swim, snorkel and sail for a few hours before sailing to our next anchorage with the sun still high. You navigate by the color of the water; yellow or brown means reef close to surface. No mishaps.

We had five stunning anchorages to ourselves. Clean, deserted beaches. One night we swam with the phosphor in Puerto Mosquito (there were none). Quite magical: June Taylor synchro swimming surrounded by fluorescence. A final highlight was returning to San Juan for the last night of the San Sebastian Festival. Very primal, thousands of us playing percussion.

Enjoyed seeing many friends from NY here, including Hilary and Beth and Eric from KSA. Now it ʼs back to Vieques, quiero mas!!!! Then on to St Martin and south for more charters. Still have time available if you want to escape winter. Send me an e-mail.

In April we ʼll begin our return: St Martin, south coast of Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Miami, Charleston, Chesapeake to Sandy Hook. Particularly enjoyed introducing Ann and Eric to ocean voyaging on the way down.

Peace. Stay warm.
